DISTILLED ON 23RD DECEMBER 1973, THIS WONDERFULLY ELEGANT LIQUID HAS SPENT ITS ENTIRE 45 YEARS IN BOURBON BARRELS, WITH THE MAJORITY OF ITS MATURATION IN REFILL BOURBON BEFORE BEING RE-CASKED INTO FIRST FILL BOURBON TO MATURE FOR A FURTHER 7 YEARS BEFORE FINALLY BEING BOTTLED AT 43.8% ABV.
Unsurprisingly, the December of 1973 was a cold, wet and windy month in Campbeltown. However, on the 23rd day, the last production to be filled into casks before Christmas was destined to become a truly wonderful Campbeltown single malt whisky. The spirit was filled into refill bourbon casks and then tucked away in bonded warehouses for over three decades to be nurtured by time and the unique Campbeltown climate.
In 2011 the liquid was carefully re-casked into first fill bourbon, then laid down to mature until 2019 when it was non-chill filtered, to retain the individual characteristics of each cask, then bottled at 43.8% to gift the world the extraordinarily rare and very sought after Glen Scotia 45 year Old.
The case for the Glen Scotia 45-year old is handmade in the UK from sustainably sourced solid British walnut. With an embossed leather lining and walnut catch securing the bottle in place, this magnificent box also contains a walnut tile engraved with the individual bottle number and tasting notes.
Bold coastal elements, sea-soaked basalt leads into thick fruit of ripe pineapple and crisp green apple before floral notes of rose, vanilla and toasted oak come through.
Viscous, oily mouthfeel coats the tongue. Caramel sweetness at first then juicy tropical fruit with pineapple, mango and water melon rounded by vanilla and honey.
Long mouth-watering finish with sea salt and lime citrus before warming cinnamon and ground ginger spice.
